Reptilemind: In humans, the equivalent to the Reptile Mind exists in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus, consisting of slightlymore than 4 gm of tissue, occupies only a small part of the entire brain, and yet it functions diversely and importantly in the regulation of many autonomic and behavioral reactions. The hypothalamus assists in the regulation of body temperature, in feeding, drinking, and mating behavior, in functions relating to biologic rhythms such as the reproductive cycles, and probably even in the onset of sleep. Its role in the maturation of behavior associated with the genders is actively being investigated. Additionally, this part of the diencephalon participates importantly in the behavioral translation of emotional feelings such as fear and rage. Within the hypothalamus are found high concentrations of many neurally active substances such as noradrenaline, serotonin, dopamine, and acetylcholinesterase. As might be expectcd, the nuclear patterns and the many connections of the hypothalamus with other regions of the central nervous system are complex.
